In fact, if we rounded up all the unused fitness books, DVDs, treadmills, pills, creams, and equipment in Calgary, we’d need a landfill the size of Crossiron Mills!

Battle With
Bulimia

People often ask me why I got into the fitness industry. To tell you the truth, I did it to save myself.

Growing up in Saskatchewan I was a very active teenager, competing in many sports. As a grade nine student, I became very obsessed with my weight. I would work out for 2 hours every day and carefully watch what I ate.

People started noticing how I was getting slimmer. The more compliments I got, the more I obsessed with the scale.

Big Secret

Exercise and good nutrition weren’t enough for me. I wanted to be thinner….so I started puking up the food I was eating.

I was over exercising, under eating, and purging every time I consumed some sort of calories. I was a little girl with a big secret that lasted for many years.

In grade 12 I realized I needed to change my way of living if I planned on living a long and healthy life. Or else I’d be facing dire, life-and-death consequences…

Escaping
the Vicious Cycle

I decided the only way to fix what was broken with me was learning more about my body and how it works.

So I decided to get my Fitness Leadership Diploma, then my Kinesiology Degree. My heart of hearts told me that I needed to get better. First for myself, then so I could help others too.

Today I’m proud to say I’m truly doing just that.

When I look at my two beautiful daughters – Hanna and Jada – I know their path through life could easily fall into the same rut mine did. I will do everything in my power to make sure my daughters find a different path – one through genuinely health of body, mind, and spirit.

Eating Less
Isn’t the Answer

A few years ago I saw Gillian Micheals speak live – you know, the woman from “The Biggest Loser”.

I (mostly) agreed with her magic formula: exercise more and eat less! Really she’s saying there’s no magic formula outside of hard work and discipline. I agree with that.

What I don’t agree with is just “eating less”.

As I struggled through my eating disorder, all I did was “eat less”.

But you and I both understand what Gillian really meant: less garbage food, less laziness, and more appropriate portions of quality food, matched with healthy, reasonable, regular exercise every week.

Boring
But True

Eat and exercise better…. isn’t that the most boring advice you’ve ever heard for getting fit?! ! And doesn’t it sound like WORK…?

This is why soooo many people in Calgary are overweight, some even obese. There’s so much conflicting information out there, a zillion different fitness options, and a litany of distractions and de-motivators lurking around every corner.

From bosses who ask you to stay late, to family who puts surprise demands on you, to just general fatigue from going through day-to-day life, it’s almost impossible to stick to a fitness program if you attempt it alone.

In fact, the VAST number of gyms and clubs literally COUNT on most members quitting after a few weeks or months. They over-sell their memberships by 200% – 500% because there’s ZERO chance all members will show up at the same time, many never showing up at all.
