#2 Looking Like an Idiot

Once you’ve made it to the gym, the next biggest obstacle kicks in: feeling intimidated or embarrassed.

Big meatheads are swaggering around, staring and judging.

There’s a clear guys area (free weights) and girls area (cardio). The guys area looks like a bear pit where they may chew you up and spit you out.

What if you accidentally lift the wrong way? Will they snicker at you, just loud enough so you can hear them?

#3 Hurting Yourself

And if you do get around to actually exercising, how do you know if you’re doing it safely?

When my husband was getting his Kinesiology degree at the U of C, he worked in the fitness centre. Some kid who didn’t know any better racked up 500 lbs on a squat rack.

The moment he unracked the weight he got crushed under the barbell, like a junkyard crusher squishing old cars.

By a stroke of extreme luck the previous lifter had placed the safety guards at the proper height, which caught the weight mere inches before the kid was totally crushed.

The kid walked away, uninjured.

Yet he was mere inches away from a catastrophic, potentially crippling injury. Saved only by one simple safety guard.

Had he had a good trainer, he would have been coached on how to setup the rack safely. How to pick the proper weight. What the proper technique was for squatting. Instead of limping away, terrified of ever lifting again, he probably would have lifted safely, successfully, eager to come back and lift some more.

While this is an extreme example, and you may never try a lift that heavy, even little injuries can be a major hassle.

The little tweak in your back that makes it uncomfortable to sit at work.

The sore knee that makes it tough to climb stairs at home.

The achey wrist that slows you down from typing.

Whether big or small, injuries are too be avoided as much as possible!

A good trainer will guide you through every exercise and give you strategies to properly rest so your body stays in the best possible condition, even when you aren’t at the gym.

Beware: Snake-oil Trainers!

Did you know almost anyone can call themselves a personal trainer?

Whether a person has taken a two-day workshop, or a 2-year diploma, or a 4-year university degree, all trainers get lumped into the same category of “personal trainer”.

A lot of the massive fitness factories around Calgary are notorious for hiring young, upbeat “trainers” with barely any formal training.

Hire them and you may be at a higher risk of getting hurt, getting bad advice, or maybe just not seeing results at all.
